Facebook, the darling of the social networking, is now the 2nd most popular Web site in the USA. It has surpassed Yahoo in Jan. Yahoo, once the gateway to the web, lost the No. 1spot to Google in February 2008 & is at 3rd place. At the rate facebook is growing, it may claim no 1 spot by the end of 2010.

Users spend a lot of time in Facebook with games like farmville, mafia war. Though twitter grabbed headlines with Iran election & other news, it has not been able to have an astronomical growth. Facebook recently introduced changes to its pages.
With Apple stealing the Mobile App store market share, the 12 leading mobile operators across the world have come together to form an App store. The combined operators will have more than 2 billion subscribers & this is huge market for the app store. Apple revolutionized the mobile app stores for its iPhone. The mobile world congress in Barcelona will see the announcement about the App store. What is surprising is the inclusion of ATT in the app store which provides iPhone service in US. Google & Blackberry have their own app stores.
Blogosphere has been agog with the rumors of Apple & Microsoft joining hands together for an iPhone Bing deal. Cold war between Apple & Google is making Apple to make Bing default search in iPhone. This will give microsoft a big push for its search market share. Also a foothold in the mobile search market. Apple has also acquired quatttro,mobile ad network. It is being said that Apple wants to change the mobile advertising market. With Quattro, Apple would be able to serve ads to the iphone. Apple has a lots of info about the users through their itunes, iphone app store purchases & also location specific data through iphones. This would help serve location based ads. With an Apple Search engine powered by bing & serving ads through Quattro based on user info would help change the mobile advertising market.
Coca-Cola’s superbowl advt for 2010 seems more like a ripoff from an Isreali Milk brand. The music, acting & the way ad is portrayed looks same. Except for a Dog which is found in the Isreali advt, both ads look similar. In the coke advt, a yound man sleepwalks miles before quenching his thrist with a coke. But the interesting fact is using the same music for both the advt.
Google has launched Google buzz, in built into Gmail. With this one can send updates, share links, pics & others. This mimics the Twitter style of sharing the updates. However, one annoying thing about Buzz is it automatically follows those whom we mail or chat with. How the hell does Buzz know I want to follow those whom I chat or mail Frequently. Twitter’s growth has stagnated in the last few months & Given Gmail being a fav of many, it might put a dent in Twitter’s growth. Yahoo has a product with the same name. Also Google is late to the party of Social networking & sharing updates compared to Twitter & Facebook.
MTV, the iconic music television channel, has removed the Music Television from its logo. The new logo is a shift in its program mix from music to more of reality television. MTV heralded the music videos decades ago & new logo reflects the Web 2.0 generation. Jersey shore, hill are some of the top MTV reality programs which lifted the ratings of MTV & this also led to the change in its logo. The new logo retains M & a smaller tv with various characters from the reality programs in the logo. An entire generation grew up on the MTV logo & it’s sad to see the change in the logo. Though the old logo served for more than 25 years, it remains to be seen how long will the new logo lost? Reality programs have become the new bread & butter of the channels now.

Google, Yahoo, MSN, Facebook & AOl are the top Mobile internet brands in a report by Neilsen. Mobile internet is taking off in a big way with the smart phones. US is one of the biggest mobile internet markets. Also in the list are weather channel & CNN. This shows people are looking for news & weather related info. Surprisingly, AOL is a top Mobile brand. Mobile advertising is also taking off in a big way. Google’s nexus one phone is its entry into smart phone market. Google’s interest in Admob, mobile ad serving company, shows the importance of mobile internet market. Facebook’s Mobile top brand position comes from its strong 350 million members.
